Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A".
