How to Replace an audi a5 key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace audi key fob the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good news is that they are very affordable and easily accessible, especially when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. It's an essential component of the audi advanced key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is the same across the Audi Car key case 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
