How to Replace an audi replacement key service G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially if you're looking at an Bosch model, like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues in your car.
