Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a tour around the world to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities.
