3 Wheel All Terrain Pushchair

A pushchair that is all-terrain and has great maneuverability will be perfect whether you're seeking a stroller for walking in the woods or for a stroll on the main street. These models typically come with large wheels and suspension that gives smooth riding on rough terrain.

The majority are suitable for infants and include seats that can be positioned on a flat surface or a baby carrycot. They are also typically fitted with foam-filled tyres that are never flat to help with maintenance.

Suspension

A true all terrain pushchair will have good suspension that is designed to be extra smooth on rough ground and help your child to feel comfortable and at ease. The wheels will also be large and usually have a puncture-proof design to avoid damage from sharp sticks or rocks.

Seat

There are a wide range of 3-wheeled all-terrain pushchairs, which offer a superb off-road capability. They are perfect if you reside in the countryside or take a walk on rough, uneven ground. These are more robust and durable than a regular pushchair. They are equipped with unique features, like big puncture-proof tires to handle the most challenging surfaces. They tend to be quite large and may be difficult to maneuver in narrow spaces or in the aisles of shops.

The seat on an all terrain 3 wheel stroller-terrain buggy may be world or parent facing and will grow with your child, from infant to toddler (it's suitable for children as young as 6 months). It has 'never-flat' foam-filled tires that offer a comfortable ride. It also comes with dual frame suspension, luxurious padding and an adjustable seat that provides excellent postural support. The new Out 'n' About Nipper V5 is a great option. It's an all-terrain stroller that is an inspiration. It comes with a great suspension and air-filled tyres, so it's suitable to jog when your child is of the right age. It has a 360-degree lockable front wheel that provides ease of maneuverability and one-handed folding. It's suitable for babies from birth and can be paired with an UPPAbaby car seat or infant car seat adapters (sold separately).

A majority of all-terrain pushchairs lack a reversible seat, but the likes of the Oyster 3, Venicci Tinum and egg 2 do offer this option and both offer an excellent level of off-road performance, and also have an adequate weight limit for a 2-year old. Many pushchairs are classified as all-rounders. These include the iCandy Pear, Bugaboo Cameleon and others. They are able to navigate rough terrain in parks and National Trust locations, but don't have the off-road capabilities as real all-terrain strollers.

There are also crossover models that are an excellent compromise between extreme off-road and high-street. They come with big wheels, excellent suspension, and are built in a pushchair-style, with reversible seating and carrycot options. Brands such as iCandy, Easywalker and Bugaboo have produced some excellent models to look at.

Wheels

All-terrain pushchairs are a must if you live in a rural area or take your child on regular walks through rough terrain. These models have bigger wheels on the back of normal pushchairs, allowing them to handle bumpy terrain better and offer a smoother ride for your child. Many models also have durable suspension and are puncture-proof so they can be used on woodland paths or forest paths, gravel roads, and market town cobbles.

Some all-terrain strollers also feature a lockable wheel on the front that provides stability when walking on rough terrain or on high kerbs. Some have swivel wheels on the front that allow you to move the buggy more easily when you need to change direction or turn corners.

Most all-terrain pushchairs feature air-filled tyres which offer excellent shock absorption and are perfect for tackling rough ground however they're more susceptible to punctures than solid EVA tyres used on lightweight city strollers so it's worth buying a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump to go with your pushchair. Some all-terrain models feature foam tyres which are less prone to punctures but they're not as good at taking in shock and could feel harder to push than tyres with air filled.

The new Bugaboo Fox 5 is a good example of a pushchair that comes with foam-filled and air-filled tyres, an excellent suspension system, and large rear puncture-proof wheels that are ideal for off-road and jogging use (once your child is old enough). It can also be used from birth with a carrycot and an incline-flat chair.

Another option is the iCandy Peach All-Terrain, which comes with large tyres and one steering wheel at the front. It's not as flexible as other strollers that are all-terrain however, it is able to manage hilly terrain and has a spacious one-handed fold that's great for long walks in the countryside, or long trips. It's also suitable for infants and comes with a large canopy that can be extended and a movable handlebar and a large, spacious basket.

Stores

There are excellent all-terrain pushchairs for parents who are looking to take their children off-road but don't want to tackle Ben Nevis. They offer the best of both. Look for models that have good all-terrain capabilities, sturdy suspension and large puncture-proof wheels, but is constructed in a traditional pushchair style with reversible seating and carrycot options.

UPPAbaby’s popular Ridge all terrain pushchair is a great model. It offers excellent suspension, a one-handed fold, and a large basket that can support up to 10 kg. But it also has numerous features that are suitable for parents, such as an adjustable handlebar and an operator-operated break on the right. The hood can be removed, and washed with cool soapy water to keep out mould and mildew.

If you are planning to take your all-terrain stroller off-road, opt for air-filled tires rather than rubber grips. These will provide a smoother ride over rough terrain, and make it easier to navigate in tight spaces. If you plan to use your all-terrain pushchair for occasional jogging make sure that the front wheel is swivelable or has a quick release feature so it can lock in position for better stability.

To keep the fabrics in perfect condition, it's important to make sure they can be machine-washed. If not, a spot clean with warm water and a little of gentle soap should suffice. The fabric can be dried completely outside to avoid mold or mildew.
