Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour support the album. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
