3. iRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy models of the competition. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is its most advanced, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a mix of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit which could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to put up with a bit more noise and a little more cost this is a capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It has a range of features that are advanced and will make you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and washes and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium rivals. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas in the house depending on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or voice controls. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It has a great vacuuming performance and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or set up a spot-clean. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app offers a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs to remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans the area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker, cheaper alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit louder than the other top robotic vacuums we've examined. It also has an app that's not as intuitive, and a smaller base station that can't double as a bin to empty.
