Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could boost the credibility of the group. Silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or entire genomes. Over time the changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of completely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial and claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestral bird's ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a profound religious belief in God and want to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. While not all creationists are Christian however, many are. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and 에볼루션바카라 old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.

They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires a miracle, and that the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.

Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. STR has secured its first victory in taking away instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
