Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon Brothers

Zeus, the god of the skies is a friendly and paternal god who has an over-inflated self-esteem. He is clever, brilliant and has a tremendous capacity of leadership.

He oversees the kingship, sky, lightning, and thunder. He also controls the sea, earthquakes and metals. His brother Hades presides over the underworld.

How did they become Gods?

The Greeks created a wide mythology that was a blend of pre- Greek culture and pre-Greek Mediterranean beliefs and other cultures that they intermarried with as they conquered their land. This was particularly relevant to their gods. Often, the representations, personalities, and stories of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades were quite similar to each other. This could be due to artistic convention, the fact that they were brothers or because the different stories were told in distinct regions.

Zeus was the first Olympian who overthrew Cronus, their father. In fear that one of his children would overthrow him, Cronus swallowed Zeus' sisters and brothers at birth. Cronus his wife Rhea managed to escape the birth to save her son. Zeus was therefore the only child who survived.

Zeus and his brother Poseidon divided the power when the Titans were defeated. Zeus was the god of the sky and his brother Poseidon was the ruler of the seas.

Hades drew the worse lot of his brothers and sisters and became the ruler of the underworld. Hades is often seen as an ominous, ghastly character who evokes fear and terror in those who come in contact with him. He is frequently accompanied by Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards his domain. He wears the Helm of Darkness and wields the bident (which is like Poseidon's tridents).

The underworld was seen by the ancient Greeks as an ethereal realm, not a hellish place. Hades was the one who watched over the souls and lives of mortal women, men and children who passed away. He also is responsible for creating life and bringing rain to those who require it.

He is also the keeper the throne for the dead. This means that he is able to decide the fate of souls, and remit them either to paradise or hell.

What is their relationship like?

Hestia, the goddess of peace is also responsible for keeping the other Olympians under control. She is also the patroness of marriage, and provides particular care of married women. She was a pious lady however she did have some relationships with Zeus who was the husband of her sister. She had children with mortals and nymphs, including Triton and Theseus.
